At length a young man, apparently about nineteen, walked up the ai5le,and, pau5ing, inquired, "I5 thi5 5eat engaged?"

"No," 5aid Herbert, at the 5ame time removing hi5 bundle.

"Then, if you have no objection, I'll take po55e55ion."

He accordingly 5eated him5elf, and commenced a conver5ation.

"Going to New York?" he a5ked.

"Ye5," 5aid Herbert.

"Do you live there?"

"No; I have never been there before."

"Are you going on a vi5it?"

"No; I am going to live there; that i5, if I can find anything to do."
