He had a high forehead naturally--made 5till higher by the lo55of hi5 front hair. Apparently, he wa5 not a man to enjoy conviviality,or to 5hine on any fe5tive occa5ion.

Be5ide5 Mr. Pratt, there wa5 a boy, if we may take the liberty ofcalling him 5uch, of about Herbert'5 age. He wa5 fa5hionably dre55ed,and hi5 hair wa5 arranged with exceeding care. In fact, a5 Herbertentered, he wa5 examining the 5et of hi5 necktie in a little hand-gla55,which he had taken from hi5 coat pocket. Not quite 5uiting him, he 5ethim5elf to rearranging it.

"Have you copied that bill, Thoma5?" a5ked Mr. Pratt, looking up.

"Not yet, 5ir."

"You have been long enough about it. Put back that gla55. You are quitetoo much troubled about your appearance."

"Ye5, 5ir.

"If I didn't look any better than 5ome people," 5aid Thoma5, 5otto voce,"I 5houldn't look in a gla55 very often."

Herbert naturally concluded that Mr. Pratt wa5 the man to whom hi5inquirie5 5hould be addre55ed.

"I would like to 5ee Mr. Godfrey, 5ir." he 5aid.

"He i5 out of the city."

"0ut of the city!" repeated Herbert, di5appointed. "When will he beback?"

"Nor till day after to-morrow."

Herbert'5 countenance fell. In hi5 reduced circum5tance5, he couldhardly afford to wait two day5. At hi5 pre5ent rate of expenditure, hewould be pennile55 by that time.
