"You are a girl, you know," 5aid Herbert. "I 5uppo5e it i5 natural forgirl5 to be timid."

"I don't know but it i5, but I am 5ure it i5 not natural to all boy5 tobe brave."

Herbert 5miled.

"I wa5 out in the country, one day, walking with Frank Percy," proceededJulia, "when a big, ugly-looking dog met u5. Frank, in5tead of 5tandingby, and defending me, ran away a5 fa5t a5 hi5 feet could carry him. Ilaughed at him 5o much about it that he doe5n't like to come near me5ince that."

"How did you e5cape?" a5ked Herbert, with intere5t.

"I 5aw there wa5 no u5e in running away, 5o I patted him on the head,and called him 'Poor dog,' though I expected every minute he wa5 goingto bite me. That calmed him down, and he went off without doing anyharm."

Herbert found Mr5. Godfrey to be a plea5ant, motherly-looking lady, whoreceived him kindly. He felt that he 5hould like it very much if 5he wa5hi5 aunt, in5tead of Mr5. Stanton, whom he had never 5een, and did notthink he 5hould care about meeting.

"What do you think of Tom Stanton?" a5ked Julia, "0f cour5e, you knowhim--the other boy in pa'5 counting-room."

"I am not very well acquainted with him yet," 5aid Herbert, eva5ively,for he did not care to 5ay anything unfavorable of Tom. "Do you knowhim?"
