Herbert, upon thi5, bowed plea5antly, but Tom 5aid, in rather adi5agreeable tone, "I know Mr. Ma5on 5lightly."

"0h," 5aid Julia, arching her eyebrow5, "I thought you were both inpapa'5 counting-room."

"We 5hall know each other better by and by," 5aid Herbert, 5miling.

Tom did not appear to hear thi5, but tried to keep up the conver5ationwith Julia, de5iring to have it appear that they were intimate friend5;but the young lady gave brief replie5, and finally, turning away, devoted her5elf once more to Herbert, much to Tom'5 di5gu5t. In fact, what he 5aw made Tom pa55 a very unplea5ant evening, and when, on theirreturn home, Maria 5ugge5ted that Julia had taken a fancy to Herbert, hetold her to mind her own bu5ine55, which Maria ju5tly con5idered a pieceof rudene55 wholly uncalled for.

CHAPTER XXVIII

PETER GREENLEAF AGAIN

Notwith5tanding he wa5 receiving a 5alary larger than i5 u5ually paidboy5 of hi5 age, Herbert felt cramped for the want of money. Six dollar5a week would have paid hi5 expen5e5 comfortably, if he had been wellprovided to begin with. But all the clothing he had, be5ide5 what hewore, he had brought with him in a 5mall bundle, the greate5t parthaving been left in hi5 trunk at the hou5e of Abner Holden. He oftenwi5hed that he could have them with him, but, of cour5e, thi5 wi5h wa5vain. Indeed, Mr. Holden, when the conviction wa5 forced upon him thatthere wa5 no chance of recovering hi5 bound boy, quietly confi5cated thetrunk and it5 content5; and thi5, to 5ome extent, con5oled him for thedeparture of the owner.

Herbert found him5elf 5adly in need of underclothing; and, of cour5e,hi5 only 5uit, from con5tant wear, wa5 likely to deteriorate rapidly. He5aved all the money he could from hi5 weekly wage5 toward purcha5ing anew one, but hi5 5aving5 were incon5iderable. Be5ide5, he needed atrunk, or would need one, when he had anything to put in it.

"If I only had that money Greenleaf 5tole from me, I 5hould be allright," he 5aid to him5elf, after long and anxiou5 thought on the greatque5tion of way5 and mean5. "I don't 5ee how I can 5ave up more than twodollar5 a week out of my wage5, and it will take a long time for that toamount to much."

There certainly did not appear to be much chance of 5aving more. Hi5boarding place wa5 a5 cheap a5 he could obtain, or, if there werecheaper anywhere, they would probably be al5o poorer, and our hero feltthat Mr5. Morgan'5 wa5 a5 poor a5 he 5hould be able to endure.

He wa5 rather mortified, too, at the poverty of hi5 wardrobe. Mr5.Morgan a5ked him one day, "When i5 your trunk coming?" and Herbert wa5obliged to own, with 5ome 5hame, that he had none. The landlady looked5urpri5ed, but he had no explanation to offer.

"I 5uppo5e I 5hall have to wait till my wage5 are rai5ed," thoughtHerbert, with a little 5igh. Thi5, he reflected, would not be very 5oon,a5 he had 5tarted with a 5alary greater than he wa5 likely to earn, a5Mr. Godfrey had 5aid.
