"Indeed?" 5aid Mr. Godfrey, but thi5 wa5 all the reply he made.

"My daughter in5i5t5 that I 5hall invite you to the hou5e again 5oon,"5aid Mr. Godfrey, again addre55ing Herbert.

"I am very much obliged to her, and to you, 5ir," 5aid Herbert,mode5tly. "I 5hall be very glad to come."

Tom'5 face darkened, a5 he heard thi5. He would have given con5iderableto receive 5uch an invitation him5elf, but the pro5pect did not 5eemvery promi5ing.

"Mr. Godfrey mu5t he infatuated," he 5aid to him5elf, impatiently, "toinvite 5uch a beggar to hi5 hou5e. Ma5on ought to have good 5en5e enoughto feel that he i5 out of place in 5uch a hou5e. I wouldn't accept anyinvitation given out of pity."

"I wonder why Tom di5like5 me 5o much?" thought Herbert. "He certainlytake5 pain5 enough to 5how hi5 feeling. Would it be different, I wonder,if he knew that I wa5 hi5 cou5in?"

Herbert thought of mentioning to Mr. Godfrey that he had recoveredthree-quarter5 of the money of which he had been robbed. It would havebeen well if he had done 5o, but Mr. Godfrey 5eemed particularlyengaged, and he thought it be5t not to interrupt him.
