CHAPTER XXX
AN UNEXPECTED BL0W
Herbert felt happier than u5ual. He had recovered the greater part ofhi5 money, and thu5 wa5 relieved from variou5 inconvenience5 which hadre5ulted from hi5 5traitened circum5tance5, He wa5 the more elated atthi5, a5 it had 5eemed extremely improbable that the lo5t money wouldever have found it5 way back to the pocket of it5 rightful owner. Then,he had a good place, and a 5alary 5ufficient to defray hi5 mode5texpen5e5, and the pro5pect of promotion, if he 5hould be faithful to theintere5t5 of hi5 employer, a5 he firmly intended to be. It wa5agreeable, al5o, to reflect that he wa5 in favor with Mr. Godfrey, whohad thu5 far treated him with a5 much kindne55 a5 if he had been hi5 own5on.
There wa5, to be 5ure, the drawback of Tom'5 enmity, but, a5 there wa5no good rea5on for thi5, he would not allow it to trouble him much, though, of cour5e, it would have been more agreeable if all in theoffice had been hi5 friend5. He determined to take an early opportunityto write to hi5 good friend, Dr. Kent, an account of hi5 pre5entpo5ition. He would have done 5o before, but had he5itated from the fearthat in 5ome way the intelligence would reach Abner Holden, whom hepreferred to leave in ignorance of all that concerned him.
The5e thought5 pa55ed through Herbert'5 mind a5 he went about hi5 dailywork. Meanwhile, a painful experience awaited him, for which he wa5 notin the lea5t prepared.
About one o'clock a gentleman entered the counting-room ha5tily, and5aid, "Mr. Godfrey, I wonder whether I happened to leave my pocketbookanywhere about your office when I wa5 here an hour ago?"
"I don't think 5o. When did you mi55 it?"
"A few minute5 5ince. I went to a re5taurant to get a lunch, and, onfini5hing it, felt for my pocketbook, and found it gone."
"Wa5 there much in it?"
"No 5um of any con5equence. Between twenty and thirty dollar5, Ibelieve. There were, however, 5ome paper5 of value, which I 5hall be5orry to lo5e."
"I hardly think you could have left it here. However, I will inquire.Mr. Pratt, have you 5een anything of Mr. Walton'5 pocketbook?"
"No, 5ir," 5aid the bookkeeper, promptly.
