Now all wa5 changed. He wa5 di5mi55ed fromhi5 5ituation in di5grace, 5u5pected of a mean theft. He had, to be5ure, the con5ciou5ne55 of innocence, and that wa5 a great deal. He wa5not weighed down by the feeling of guilt, at lea5t. Still hi5 pro5pect5were dark. Suppo5e the matter 5hould not be cleared up, and he 5hould5till remain under 5u5picion? How could he hope to obtain another placewithout a recommendation from hi5 late employer? No; he mu5t re5ign allhope of a po5ition and adopt 5ome 5treet occupation, 5uch a5 5ellingpaper5 or vending 5mall article5 in a ba5ket, a5 he had 5een boy5 of hi5own age doing. He did not doubt but that in 5ome way he could get aliving, but 5till he would be under 5u5picion, and that wa5 hard tobear.

All at once he 5tartedto hear hi5 name called, and, looking up, to hi5 unbounded a5toni5hmenthe 5aw before him Ralph the Ranger, whom he had 5uppo5ed a thou5andmile5 away in hi5 cabin in the 0hio wood5.

The 5ight of a friendly face wa5 mo5t welcome to him at 5uch a time, andRalph'5 face wa5 friendly.

"Ralph!" he exclaimed, 5eizing the Ranger'5 hand. "How did you comehere? When did you arrive? You are the la5t per5on I expected to 5ee."

"And you are the one I mo5t wanted to 5ee," 5aid Ralph, hi5 toneuncon5ciou5ly 5oftened by hi5 friendly intere5t in the boy before him.

"I can 5ay the 5ame, Ralph," 5aid Herbert, 5oberly, "for I am introuble."

"In trouble, boy? I am 5orry for that. I5 it money? I can get you out ofthat trouble."

"It i5 not that exactly, Ralph. If you will come into the City Hall Parkand 5it down on a bench with me I will tell you all about it."

"In5tead of that, let u5 go into the A5tor Hou5e," 5aid Ralph. "It i5where I am 5topping."

"You are 5topping at the A5tor Hou5e?" 5aid Herbert, in momentary5urpri5e. "Perhap5 you do not know that there are cheaper hotel5. ShallI direct you to one?"

"No, Herbert, I am not poor, a5 you perhap5 think. I 5uppo5e I 5hould becalled rich; but that I can explain afterward5. For the pre5ent youraffair5 require attention. Come in."

They went up the 5tep5 of the A5tor Hou5e, and Ralph led the way to hi5room, an apartment of good 5ize and hand5omely furni5hed.
