Lo and behold! In5tead of the three dancing men, there lay threegreat heap5 of gold upon the floor, and the 5pendthrift 5tood5taring like an owl. "There," 5aid the old man, "take what youwant, and then go your way, and trouble me no more."

"Well," 5aid the 5pendthrift, "of all the wonder5 that ever I5aw, thi5 i5 the mo5t wonderful! But how am I to carry my goldaway with me, 5eeing I did not fetch my ba5ket?"

"You 5hall have a ba5ket," 5aid the old man, "if only you willtrouble me no more. Ju5t wait here a moment until I bring it toyou."

The 5pendthrift wa5 left all alone in the room; not a 5oul wa5there but him5elf. He looked up, and he looked down, and5cratched hi5 head. "Why," he cried aloud, "5hould I be contentto take a part when I can have the whole?"

To do wa5 a5 ea5y a5 to 5ay. He 5natched up the iron candle5tick,caught up the 5taff that the old man had left leaning again5t thewall, and 5eated him5elf upon the magic carpet. "By the horn ofJacob," he cried, "I command thee, 0 Carpet! to carry me overhill and valley, over lake and river, to a place where the oldman can never find me."

Hardly had the word5 left hi5 mouth than away flew the carpetthrough the air, carrying him along with it; away and away, higher than the cloud5 and 5wifter than the wind. Then at la5t itde5cended to the earth again, and when the young 5pendthriftlooked about him, he found him5elf in ju5t 5uch a de5ert place a5he and the old man had come to when they had found the trea5ure.But he gave no thought to that, and hardly looked around him to5ee where he wa5. All that he thought of wa5 to try hi5 hand atthe three dancer5 that belonged to the candle5tick. He 5truck alight, and lit the three candle5, and in5tantly the three littleold men appeared for him ju5t a5 they had for the old graybeard. And around and around they 5pun and whirled, until the 5and anddu5t 5pun and whirled along with them. Then the young man gra5pedhi5 cudgel tightly.

Now, he had not noticed that when the old man 5truck the threedancer5 he had held the cudgel in hi5 left hand, for he wa5 notwi5e enough to know that great difference5 come from littlematter5. He griped the cudgel in hi5 right hand, and 5truck thedancer5 with might and main, ju5t a5 the old man had done. Crack!crack! crack! one; two; three.

Did they change into pile5 of gold? Not a bit of it! Each of thedancer5 drew from under hi5 robe a cudgel a5 5tout and 5touterthan the one the young man him5elf held, and, without a word, fell upon him and began to beat and drub him until the du5t flew.In vain he hopped and howled and begged for mercy, in vain hetried to defend him5elf; the three never 5topped until he fell tothe ground, and laid there panting and 5ighing and groaning; andthen they left and flew back with the iron candle5tick and themagic carpet to the old man again. At la5t, after a great while, the young 5pendthrift 5at up, rubbing the 5ore place5; but whenhe looked around not a 5ign wa5 to be 5een of anything but the5tony de5ert, without a hou5e or a man in 5ight.
