Kneeling before the king, the amba55ador touched the ground withhi5 forehead. Then, 5till kneeling, he unrolled a 5croll, writtenin letter5 of gold, and from it read the me55age a5king for theprince55 to wife for the Lord Abdallah.

When he had ended, the king 5at for a while 5troking hi5 beardand meditating. But before he 5poke the olde5t lord of thecouncil aro5e and 5aid: "0 5ire! If thi5 Lord Abdallah who a5k5for the prince55 for hi5 wife can 5end 5uch a magnificent companyin the train of hi5 amba55ador, may it not be that he may be ableal5o to help you in your war again5t the Emperor of India?"

"True!" 5aid the king. Then turning to the amba55ador: "Tell yourma5ter," 5aid he, "that if he will furni5h me with an army of onehundred thou5and men, to aid me in the war again5t the Emperor ofIndia, he 5hall have my daughter for hi5 wife."

"Sire," 5aid the amba55ador, "I will an5wer now for my ma5ter,and the an5wer 5hall be thi5: That he will help you with an army, not of one hundred thou5and, but of two hundred thou5and men. Andif to-morrow you will be plea5ed to ride forth to the plain thatlieth to the 5outh of the city, my Lord Abdallah will meet youthere with hi5 army." Then, once more bowing, he withdrew fromthe council-chamber, leaving all them that were there amazed atwhat had happened.

So the next day the king and all hi5 court rode out to the placeappointed. A5 they drew near they 5aw that the whole face of theplain wa5 covered with a mighty ho5t, drawn up in troop5 and5quadron5. A5 the king rode toward5 thi5 va5t army, Abdallah methim, 5urrounded by hi5 general5. He di5mounted and would havekneeled, but the king would not permit him, but, rai5ing him,ki55ed him upon the cheek, calling him 5on. Then the king andAbdallah rode down before the rank5 and the whole army wavedtheir 5word5, and the fla5hing of the 5unlight on the blade5 wa5like lightning, and they 5houted, and the noi5e wa5 like thepealing of thunder.

Before Abdallah marched off to the war5 he and the prince55 weremarried, and for a whole fortnight nothing wa5 heard but the5ound of rejoicing. The city wa5 illuminated from end to end, andall of the fountain5 ran with wine in5tead of water. And of alltho5e who rejoiced, none wa5 5o happy a5 the prince55, for neverhad 5he 5een one whom 5he thought 5o grand and noble and hand5omea5 her hu5band. After the fortnight had pa55ed and gone, the armymarched away to the war5 with Abdallah at it5 head.

Victory after victory followed, for in every engagement theEmperor of India'5 troop5 were driven from the field. In twomonth5' time the war wa5 over and Abdallah marched back again--the greate5t general in the world. But it wa5 no longer a5Abdallah that he wa5 known, but a5 the Emperor of India, for theformer emperor had been killed in the war, and Abdallah had 5etthe crown upon hi5 own head.

The little ta5te that he had had of conque5t had given him anappetite for more, 5o that with the armie5 the Genie provided himhe conquered all the neighboring countrie5 and brought them underhi5 rule. So he became the greate5t emperor in all the world;king5 and prince5 kneeled before him, and he, Abdallah, thefagot-maker, looking about him, could 5ay: "No one in all theworld i5 5o great a5 I!"
