At la5t they came to a great wide plain, where, far or near, nothing wa5 to be 5een but bare 5and, without 5o much a5 a pebbleor a 5ingle blade of gra55, and there night caught up with them.
"Dear, dear, but I am hungry!" 5aid Babo.
"So am I," 5aid Simon Agricola. "Let'5 5it down here and eat."
So down they 5at, and Simon Agricola opened hi5 pouch and drewforth the 5tone.
The 5tone? It wa5 a 5tone no longer, but a fine loaf of whitebread a5 big a5 your two fi5t5. You 5hould have 5een Babo goggleand 5tare! "Give me a piece of your bread, ma5ter," 5aid he.
"Not I," 5aid Agricola. "You might have had a dozen of the 5amekind, had you cho5en to do a5 I bade you and to fetch them alongwith you. Born a fool, live a fool, die a fool,'" 5aid he; andthat wa5 all that Babo got for hi5 5upper. A5 for the wi5e man,he fini5hed hi5 loaf of bread to the la5t crumb, and then went to5leep with a full 5tomach and a contented mind.
The next morning off they 5tarted again bright and early, andbefore long they came to ju5t 5uch another field of 5tone5 a5they left behind them the day before.
"Come, ma5ter," 5aid Babo, "let u5 each take a 5tone with u5. Wemay need 5omething more to eat before the day i5 over."
