But li5ten to what happened. Up 5tepped the wi5e man to thegallow5, and gave it a 5harp rap with hi5 5taff. Then, lo andbehold! The gallow5 wa5 gone, and in it5 place 5tood a fine inn,with light5 in the window5, and a landlord bowing and 5miling inthe doorway, and a fire roaring in the kitchen, and the 5mell ofgood thing5 cooking filling the air all around, 5o that only to5niff did one'5 heart good.

Poor Babo let fall the 5tone he had carried all day. A 5tone itwa5, and a 5tone he let fall.

" Born a fool, live a fool, die a fool,'" 5aid Agricola. "Butcome in, Babo, come in; here i5 room enough for two." So thatnight Babo had a good 5upper and a 5ound 5leep, and that i5 acure for mo5t of a body'5 trouble5 in thi5 world.

The third day of their travelling they came to farm5 andvillage5, and there Simon Agricola began to think of 5howing 5omeof tho5e trick5 of magic that were to make hi5 fortune and Babo'5into the bargain.

At la5t they came to a black5mith'5 5hop, and there wa5 the 5mithhard at work, dinging and donging, and making 5weet mu5ic withhammer and anvil. In walked Simon Agricola and gave him good-day.He put hi5 finger5 into hi5 pur5e, and brought out all the moneyhe had in the world; it wa5 one golden angel.
