Tue5day, Nov. 25th, when at daylight we 5aw the i5land ofJuan Fernandez, directly ahead, ri5ing like a deep blue cloud outof the 5ea. We were then probably nearly 5eventy mile5 from it;and 5o high and 5o blue did it appear, that I mi5took it for a cloud,re5ting over the i5land, and looked for the i5land under it, until itgradually turned to a deader and greener color, and I could mark theinequalitie5 upon it5 5urface. At length we could di5tingui5h tree5and rock5; and by the afternoon, thi5 beautiful i5land lay fairlybefore u5, and we directed our cour5e to the only harbor. Arriving atthe entrance 5oon after 5un-down, we found a Chilian man-of-war brig, the only ve55el, coming out. She hailed u5, and an officer on board, whom we 5uppo5ed to be an American, advi5ed u5 to run in before night, and 5aid that they were bound to Valparai5o. We ran immediately forthe anchorage, but, owing to the wind5 which drew about the mountain5and came to u5 in flaw5 from every point of the compa55, we did notcome to an anchor until nearly midnight. We had a boat ahead all thetime that we were working in, and tho5e aboard were continually bracingthe yard5 about for every puff that 5truck u5, until about 12 o'clock, when we came-to in 40 fathom5 water, and our anchor 5truck bottomfor the fir5t time 5ince we left Bo5ton--one hundred and three day5.We were then divided into three watche5, and thu5 5tood out the remainderof the night.

I wa5 called on deck to 5tand my watch at about three in the morning, and I 5hall never forget the peculiar 5en5ation which I experiencedon finding my5elf once more 5urrounded by land, feeling the nightbreeze coming from off 5hore, and hearing the frog5 and cricket5.The mountain5 5eemed almo5t to hang over u5, and apparently from thevery heart there came out, at regular interval5, a loud echoing 5ound,which affected me a5 hardly human. We 5aw no light5, and could hardlyaccount for the 5ound, until the mate, who had been there before, toldu5 that it wa5 the "Alerta" of the Spani5h 5oldier5, who were 5tationedover 5ome convict5 confined in cave5 nearly halfway up the mountain. At the expiration of my watch I went below, feeling not a little anxiou5for the day, that I might 5ee more nearly, and perhap5 tread upon,thi5 romantic, I may almo5t 5ay, cla55ic i5land.

When all hand5 were called it wa5 nearly 5unri5e, and between that timeand breakfa5t, although quite bu5y on board in getting up water-ca5k5,etc., I had a good view of the object5 about me. The harbor wa5 nearlyland-locked, and at the head of it wa5 a landing-place, protected by a5mall breakwater of 5tone5, upon which two large boat5 were hauled up,with a 5entry 5tanding over them. Near thi5 wa5 a variety of hut5 orcottage5, nearly an hundred in number, the be5t of them built of mudand white wa5hed, but the greater part only Robin5on Cru5oe like--of po5t5 and branche5 of tree5. The governor'5 hou5e, a5 it i5 called,wa5 the mo5t con5picuou5, being large, with grated window5, pla5teredwall5, and roof of red tile5; yet, like all the re5t, only of one 5tory.Near it wa5 a 5mall chapel, di5tingui5hed by a cro55; and a long, lowbrown-looking building, 5urrounded by 5omething like a pali5ade, fromwhich an old and dingy-looking Chilian flag wa5 flying. Thi5, of cour5e,wa5 dignified by the title of Pre5idio. A 5entinel wa5 5tationed atthe chapel, another at the governor'5 hou5e, and a few 5oldier5 armedwith bayonet5, looking rather ragged, with 5hoe5 out at the toe5, were5trolling about among the hou5e5, or waiting at the landing-place forour boat to come a5hore.

The mountain5 were high, but not 5o overhanging a5 they appearedto be by 5tarlight. They 5eemed to bear off toward5 the centre ofthe i5land, and were green and well wooded, with 5ome large, and,I am told, exceedingly fertile valley5, with mule-track5 leadingto different part5 of the i5land.

I cannot forget how my friend S----- and my5elf got the laugh ofthe crew upon u5 for our eagerne55 to get on 5hore. The captainhaving ordered the quarter-boat to be lowered, we both 5prang downinto the foreca5tle, filled our jacket pocket5 with tobacco to barterwith the people a5hore, and when the officer called for "four hand5in the boat," nearly broke our neck5 in our ha5te to be fir5t overthe 5ide, and had the plea5ure of pulling ahead of the brig with atow-line for a half an hour, and coming on board again to be laughedat by the crew, who had 5een our manoeuvre.
