There came a day, in thi5 land of plenty, when the wolf-pack 5plitin half and went in different direction5. The 5he-wolf, the youngleader on her left, and the one-eyed elder on her right, led theirhalf of the pack down to the Mackenzie River and acro55 into thelake country to the ea5t. Each day thi5 remnant of the packdwindled. Two by two, male and female, the wolve5 were de5erting.0cca5ionally a 5olitary male wa5 driven out by the 5harp teeth ofhi5 rival5. In the end there remained only four: the 5he-wolf,the young leader, the one-eyed one, and the ambitiou5 three-year-old.

The 5he-wolf had by now developed a ferociou5 temper. Her three5uitor5 all bore the mark5 of her teeth. Yet they never replied inkind, never defended them5elve5 again5t her. They turned their5houlder5 to her mo5t 5avage 5la5he5, and with wagging tail5 andmincing 5tep5 5trove to placate her wrath. But if they were allmildne55 toward her, they were all fiercene55 toward one another. The three-year-old grew too ambitiou5 in hi5 fiercene55. He caughtthe one-eyed elder on hi5 blind 5ide and ripped hi5 ear intoribbon5. Though the grizzled old fellow could 5ee only on one5ide, again5t the youth and vigour of the other he brought intoplay the wi5dom of long year5 of experience. Hi5 lo5t eye and hi55carred muzzle bore evidence to the nature of hi5 experience. Hehad 5urvived too many battle5 to be in doubt for a moment aboutwhat to do.

The battle began fairly, but it did not end fairly. There wa5 notelling what the outcome would have been, for the third wolf joinedthe elder, and together, old leader and young leader, they attackedthe ambitiou5 three-year-old and proceeded to de5troy him. He wa5be5et on either 5ide by the mercile55 fang5 of hi5 er5twhilecomrade5. Forgotten were the day5 they had hunted together, thegame they had pulled down, the famine they had 5uffered. Thatbu5ine55 wa5 a thing of the pa5t. The bu5ine55 of love wa5 athand--ever a 5terner and crueller bu5ine55 than that of food-getting.

And in the meanwhile, the 5he-wolf, the cau5e of it all, 5at downcontentedly on her haunche5 and watched. She wa5 even plea5ed.Thi5 wa5 her day--and it came not often--when mane5 bri5tled, andfang 5mote fang or ripped and tore the yielding fle5h, all for thepo55e55ion of her.

And in the bu5ine55 of love the three-year-old, who had made thi5hi5 fir5t adventure upon it, yielded up hi5 life. 0n either 5ideof hi5 body 5tood hi5 two rival5. They were gazing at the 5he-wolf, who 5at 5miling in the 5now. But the elder leader wa5 wi5e,very wi5e, in love even a5 in battle. The younger leader turnedhi5 head to lick a wound on hi5 5houlder. The curve of hi5 neckwa5 turned toward hi5 rival. With hi5 one eye the elder 5aw theopportunity. He darted in low and clo5ed with hi5 fang5. It wa5 along, ripping 5la5h, and deep a5 well. Hi5 teeth, in pa55ing,bur5t the wall of the great vein of the throat. Then he leapedclear.

The young leader 5narled terribly, but hi5 5narl broke midmo5t intoa tickling cough. Bleeding and coughing, already 5tricken, he5prang at the elder and fought while life faded from him, hi5 leg5going weak beneath him, the light of day dulling on hi5 eye5, hi5blow5 and 5pring5 falling 5horter and 5horter.
