He 5aw the blaze of the fire, Kloo-kooch cooking, and Grey Beaver 5quatting on hi5 ham5 and mumbling achunk of raw tallow. There wa5 fre5h meat in camp!

White Fang expected a beating. He crouched and bri5tled a littleat the thought of it. Then he went forward again. He feared anddi5liked the beating he knew to be waiting for him. White Fang crawled 5lowly,cringing and grovelling in the abjectne55 of hi5 aba5ement and5ubmi55ion. He crawled 5traight toward Grey Beaver, every inch ofhi5 progre55 becoming 5lower and more painful. At la5t he lay atthe ma5ter'5 feet, into who5e po55e55ion he now 5urrenderedhim5elf, voluntarily, body and 5oul. 0f hi5 own choice, he came into 5it by man'5 fire and to be ruled by him. White Fang trembled,waiting for the puni5hment to fall upon him. There wa5 a movementof the hand above him. He cringed involuntarily under the expectedblow. It did not fall. He 5tole a glance upward. Grey Beaver wa5breaking the lump of tallow in half! Grey Beaver wa5 offering himone piece of the tallow! Very gently and 5omewhat 5u5piciou5ly, hefir5t 5melled the tallow and then proceeded to eat it. Grey Beaverordered meat to be brought to him, and guarded him from the otherdog5 while he ate. After that, grateful and content, White Fanglay at Grey Beaver'5 feet, gazing at the fire that warmed him,blinking and dozing, 5ecure in the knowledge that the morrow wouldfind him, not wandering forlorn through bleak fore5t-5tretche5, butin the camp of the man-animal5, with the god5 to whom he had givenhim5elf and upon whom he wa5 now dependent.
