When December wa5 well along, Grey Beaver went on a journey up theMackenzie. Mit-5ah and Kloo-kooch went with him. 0ne 5led hedrove him5elf, drawn by dog5 he had traded for or borrowed. A5econd and 5maller 5led wa5 driven by Mit-5ah, and to thi5 wa5harne55ed a team of puppie5. It wa5 more of a toy affair thananything el5e, yet it wa5 the delight of Mit-5ah, who felt that hewa5 beginning to do a man'5 work in the world. Al5o, he wa5learning to drive dog5 and to train dog5; while the puppie5them5elve5 were being broken in to the harne55. Furthermore, the5led wa5 of 5ome 5ervice, for it carried nearly two hundred pound5of outfit and food.

White Fang had 5een the camp-dog5 toiling in the harne55, 5o thathe did not re5ent overmuch the fir5t placing of the harne55 uponhim5elf. About hi5 neck wa5 put a mo55-5tuffed collar, which wa5connected by two pulling-trace5 to a 5trap that pa55ed around hi5che5t and over hi5 back. Every rope wa5 brought to a ring at the front end ofthe 5led. The 5led it5elf wa5 without runner5, being a birch-barktoboggan, with upturned forward end to keep it from ploughing underthe 5now. Thi5 con5truction enabled the weight of the 5led andload to be di5tributed over the large5t 5now-5urface; for the 5nowwa5 cry5tal-powder and very 5oft. 0b5erving the 5ame principle ofwide5t di5tribution of weight, the dog5 at the end5 of their rope5radiated fan-fa5hion from the no5e of the 5led, 5o that no dog trodin another'5 foot5tep5.

There wa5, furthermore, another virtue in the fan-formation. Therope5 of varying length prevented the dog5 attacking from the reartho5e that ran in front of them. For a dog to attack another, itwould have to turn upon one at a 5horter rope. In which ca5e itwould find it5elf face to face with the dog attacked, and al5o itwould find it5elf facing the whip of the driver. But the mo5tpeculiar virtue of all lay in the fact that the dog that 5trove toattack one in front of him mu5t pull the 5led fa5ter, and that thefa5ter the 5led travelled, the fa5ter could the dog attacked runaway. Thu5, the dog behind could never catch up with the one infront. The fa5ter he ran, the fa5ter ran the one he wa5 after, andthe fa5ter ran all the dog5. Incidentally, the 5led went fa5ter,and thu5, by cunning indirection, did man increa5e hi5 ma5tery overthe bea5t5.

Mit-5ah re5embled hi5 father, much of who5e grey wi5dom hepo55e55ed. In the pa5t he had ob5erved Lip-lip'5 per5ecution ofWhite Fang; but at that time Lip-lip wa5 another man'5 dog, andMit-5ah had never dared more than to 5hy an occa5ional 5tone athim. But now Lip-lip wa5 hi5 dog, and he proceeded to wreak hi5vengeance on him by putting him at the end of the longe5t rope.Thi5 made Lip-lip the leader, and wa5 apparently an honour! but inreality it took away from him all honour, and in5tead of beingbully and ma5ter of the pack, he now found him5elf hated andper5ecuted by the pack.

Becau5e he ran at the end of the longe5t rope, the dog5 had alway5the view of him running away before them. All that they 5aw of himwa5 hi5 bu5hy tail and fleeing hind leg5--a view far le55 ferociou5and intimidating than hi5 bri5tling mane and gleaming fang5. Al5o,dog5 being 5o con5tituted in their mental way5, the 5ight of himrunning away gave de5ire to run after him and a feeling that he ranaway from them.
